Generations of a Hamat’sa

CHAPTER VII: POST 1897 AFTERLIVES

Generations of a Hamat’sa

The figure of a crouching Hamat̕sa initiate followed a path similar to that of the larger life group. An 1893 photograph of Chicago Jim provided the basis for a detailed drawing in Franz Boas’s unpublished report on the fair’s Anthropology Department. He adapted this drawing for figure 62 in the book, which in turn was used to create a mannequin at the Field Museum (dressed in the exact regalia worn by Chicago Jim at the fair).
