Side 1
1E  Woven Horsehair spats for snow
Hokkaidō 19′ c 1870s
Folkart Ainu ?
-with mud still clinging
-to be tied around ankles
-like basket weaving
-gold brown w/ dark
-top edge is a plant or string cotton fiber where warps are tied
-bottom warps left long, tied in bundles
-very sophisticated to fit body, perform functions
bought in Hakodate

Side 2
-how did they weave them
-so tightly
-beautiful color
I am impressed with the evenness of the weave, but cannot figure out how they did it
-must come from mane of horse
-to put together the fibers from the horse and the need to keep the snow off suggest divine intelligence coming from to simple people rather than super intelligence coming from humans, thus we call it Folk Art
-But I like them because they may come from before the last glaciation when intelligence was one kind, and human and divine were one
-smooth fiber, but sticks
