Tapis, garment or woman’s skirt
Side 1
7 + I Tapis / Garment / Woman’s Skirt 1900s 7A
Lampong Sunkai,
South Sumatra
very fine embroidery
saffron dye
irregular mica chips
bottom edge repaired
staining + holes
backstrap loom in 2 strips
hand spun
20753
7800
Mary Hunt Kahlenberg
Side 2
What I love about this piece is how the strips centered on dark red (moraga?) are luminous (saffron?) between the browns (indigo and madder?)
The darks have mica chips, but the darkest, widest has embroidery. The embroidery is done with threads in varying colors (green, yellow) like Islamic weaving, very abstract, but still from sources in nature
Side 1
7A (cont.)
As a collector, I would hope to have had a more important piece from this district of Sumatra—The traditions of opulence expressed in textiles is major—alas, it was not meant to be… However, I see the price I paid and 1, know why I could not afford what a more important piece would cost and 2, am surprised I have this one!
-many interesting repairs
