Beginning in 1956 when she was 75 years old, Irish-born Eileen Gray assembled a selection of her work into two portfolios that document her decades-long career as a designer and architect. The portfolios are now the collection of the National Museum of Ireland and both include pages of black-and-white photographs, sketches, architectural plans, elevations, and cross sections, all arranged in chronological order and pasted alongside typewritten labels. Here Gray gives equal attention to the lacquered furniture and interiors she designed in the 1910s and 1920s as she does to her architectural work, chronicling built projects alongside unrealized projects that include residential structures, social projects, and urban plans. Interestingly, Gray chose not to document some of her most famous designs in this portfolio, and also chose to omit her painting and photography work, a practice which she perhaps considered private and separate from her career as an architect and designer.
