Winter Ceremonial, Fort Rupert, 1894

Boas hired Victoria-based photographer Oregon Hastings to document the ceremonies occurring at Fort Rupert. The two men made landscape and architectural studies, took portraits, and captured sequential images of oratory and initiation procedures (such as the Hamat’sa initiations presented here)—among the earliest of such photographic series in the history of anthropology.
