World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893

To document Kwakwaka’wakw dance displays in Chicago, Boas hired a commercial photographer named John Grabill. Boas likely had future print illustrations in mind when he hung a white cloth behind the dancers. Archival originals show troupe members drumming on a plank in front of the Leather and Shoe Trades building, which was adjacent to the ethnographic village where the troupe lived.
